Rainwater harvesting is one of the oldest methods of self supply of water for crops and around the home and garden, by collecting and storing precious rainwater for re use when needed. This can be as simple as using a water-butt connected to your guttering downpipe, or maybe a more sophisticated system that will filter the rainwater, enabling it to be used in and around the home for uses such as clothes washing and toilet flushing as well as outside watering capabilities including, car cleaning and garden/crop irrigation, yard cleaning, livestock drinking water and fire protection.
In Essex we have over 600mm of rainfall annually and with the average house having a roof area of around a 100msq. This would provide you with over 4000ltrs of free rainwater per month for use in and around the home, and if you have outbuildings or garden buildings these can all be connected to the system, increasing the volume of re usable water for storage.
it is advised to harvest and store two- three months worth of rainwater, so for a house with a roof area of 100m2 that is a volume of 12000ltrs of stored water.
Harvesting rainwater is not only a environmentally friendly method of water use, it is a wise financial investment. With water bills rising year and the cost of living as it is, being more sustainable is becoming more essential to so many in our rapidly changing world. Installing a harvesting system to your home could lower your water bills by over 50%, and if you included a grey water tank to your system you could save even more.
